eSIM vs. roaming: the honest math

Carriers have made roaming less painful than it was, but "less painful" still means $10–15 a day on most plans. Here is how that compares with a travel eSIM for real trips.

A two-week trip, three ways

  • Carrier day pass (US carriers, typical): $10–12 per day → $140–168 for 14 days.
  • Carrier monthly roaming add-on (UK/EU carriers outside the EU): $25–60 for a small bundle, often 1–5 GB.
  • Travel eSIM (eSIM BFF, 5 GB, 30 days): $5.90 in Europe, $7.90–8.90 in most of Asia, $9.90 in the US.

When roaming is actually fine

  • Inside the EU on an EU SIM — roam-like-at-home rules mean no extra cost (except Switzerland, the UK, and the Balkans).
  • Trips of one or two days where a $10 day pass is not worth the setup.
  • Carriers with genuinely included international data (some US premium plans include Canada/Mexico).

When an eSIM wins clearly

  • Any trip over three days outside your carrier’s free zone.
  • Multi-country trips — one eSIM BFF profile, add a package per country.
  • Families — four day-passes for four phones adds up fast; four 5 GB eSIMs do not.
  • Countries where your carrier has no roaming partner (common in Central Asia and parts of Africa).

Speed and coverage

Both use the same local networks. A travel eSIM often gives you access to two or three carriers and picks the strongest, while your home carrier usually has one roaming partner per country. In practice, eSIMs frequently deliver better coverage outside cities.

The gotchas

  • Roaming: bill shock if the day pass fails to trigger, or if you cross a border into a non-included country.
  • eSIM: you must turn Data Roaming on for the eSIM line and off for your home SIM. Forget the second part and you can still get carrier charges.
  • eSIM: data-only — your calls still go through your home SIM (or WhatsApp).

Frequently asked

Will my home carrier know I used an eSIM?

No, and it does not matter. Your home SIM simply sees no data usage abroad.

Can I keep receiving SMS codes from my bank?

Yes. SMS arrives on your home SIM over the local network (free to receive on almost every carrier).

One eSIM, topped up per trip. Same profile next time.
